What are the necessary checks for the condition of the car before renting out?

Before renting your car, you must make sure that it is working and suitable for travel. The procedure for checking the technical condition of the car should be timely and regular. Do not rent a car unless one of the following conditions is met.

- The condition of the tires and their deterioration.

Worn or under-inflated tires can affect the stability of the car on the road, increase the braking distance and increase the risk of aquaplaning and punctures.

You must check your tire inflation at least once a month.

To do this, you will need a pressure gauge or any of the standard inflation devices that can be found at most gas stations or at a tire service. If the inflation pressure is within the range recommended by the manufacturer (this is usually indicated on the driver's door and / or in the service manual). Ideally, you should measure the pressure when the tires are cold, but if you measure after driving, add 0.3 bar to the manufacturer's recommended pressure. Please note that recommended tire pressures for front and rear tires may vary.

Worn tires - are dangerous when driving.

The average tire life is about 30,000 km, but it depends on how you use the car and the driving style.

Start by checking the tires for general wear and tear (cracks, abrasions, sealed punctures, etc.). Then measure the tread wear using tread wear indicators or “wear bars”. To find them, find the triangle, manufacturer's logo, or TWI mark on the edge of the tire. Wear-resistant strips look like small bumps between the tread patterns, like smooth rubber strips cast on the tire surface. When the tread wears out to the level of alignment with these stripes, the tires are considered “bald” and must be replaced.

Your tires should have a tread depth of at least 1.6 mm. Be sure to check all four tires, as sometimes the rear tires do not wear out as fast as the front ones.

- Bulbs and LED indicators.

Check all the bulbs of your car: high and low beam headlights, side lights, fog lights, taillights, emergency lights, LED indicators, instrument panel and, finally, lighting around the license plate.

It is almost impossible to guess when the bulb is about to fail, so just in case, have spare bulbs and fuses in the box. It is recommended to replace light lamps in pairs to avoid differences in efficiency between the two sides.

Make sure that the headlights are level-corrected: Position the vehicle 10 meters from the wall and make sure that the rays projected onto the wall are at the same height from the ground. If one of your headlights is too high, the risk of blinding another driver is 20 times higher!

- Brake system.

The brake system contains several elements that need to be checked.
If your brake pads are in poor condition, the braking distance will increase. Worn brake discs cause abrupt and ineffective braking.
Low brake fluid levels also affect braking speed and efficiency.
If you notice any of the following symptoms, you should immediately check the brakes:

  • The car deviates left or right when braking;
  • Contact with the brake pedal is hard or too soft;
  • Your brakes squeal;
  • The steering wheel vibrates when braking.

Brake discs

Be sure to replace the brake discs if you find anything abnormal (if the disc has deep grooves, cracks or it is chipped, etc.) If the minimum disc wear thickness is reached (this can be found in the technical specifications of your car).
Please note that when changing brake discs, you also need to replace the pads.
The brake discs change every 60,000 km or so.

Brake pads

Brake pads wear out faster and need to be replaced more often than brake discs (approximately every 30,000 km).
Checking the condition of the brake pads is quite simple: most cars are equipped with a brake pad warning which lights up when your brake pads are worn out. You can also disassemble the wheels yourself and measure the thickness of the pads (the minimum thickness is indicated in the technical specifications of your car).
Your brake fluid level is also a good indicator of how worn your brake pads are: the larger the worn pads, the lower the level of brake fluid.

- Do not forget to check ...

  • The condition of the windshield. You must change it if it has a crack.
  • Levels of antifreeze (coolant), engine oil, and windshield washer fluid (based on weather conditions).
  • The condition of the wipers: they should not leave traces of their work, they should be changed twice a year (during the transition season).
  • Condition and mounting of side mirrors and rear view.
  • In the trunk should be: a spare tire, warning triangle and high visibility jacket - this is the law!

If you have the slightest doubt about the safety of your car, do not rent it out.
