The concept of the brake system.
There are two types of brake systems: disc and drum brakes. Disc brakes are used more widely, but drum systems can still be found on economy class cars. The brake system has several basic control elements: a brake pad and a brake disc (drum in the case of drum brakes). The brake system gradually wears out during use, so it is important to check them regularly.
When to change brake pads?
A few rules:
- Check brake pads every 30,000 km after replacement.
- When the brake system image lights up (see images below), your brake shoe has worn out. For vehicles that are not equipped with signal lights, it is necessary to periodically check the thickness of the brake pads. When they are less than 3 mm in thickness, worn pads must be replaced.
When to change brake discs?
- Check brake discs approximately every 40,000 km.
- If the brake disc is damaged (excessively worn, cracked or deeply scratched), or if it has reached the minimum thickness level, it must be replaced immediately (information can be found in the car manual).
When to change brake fluid?
- On average, every 2 years.
- If the brake fluid indicator appears on the instrument panel, the fluid must be replaced.
Related indicators indicating problems with the brake system:
- The steering wheel vibrates when braking.
- Squeaking and/or whistling of brake pads (discs).
- Increased stopping distance.
- The brake pedal is hard or too soft.
- The car pulls when braking in one direction in the direction of travel.
